The Shifting View of Automation in Healthcare with Matt Dickson from Stericycle

As I think about my years in health IT, tech people have always been interested in automation.  It’s one of the beauties of many technologies.  You can automate processes in ways that weren’t previously possible.  However, the same wasn’t always true for healthcare workers.  Some people in healthcare saw automation as a threat to their jobs.  Many clinicians were afraid of automation since they didn’t think they could trust it with something as important as patient care.  Others just simply didn’t want to deal with the changes that came with automation.

While some of these views still prevail, each of these views is starting to change in a big way as more and more healthcare organizations are embracing automation.  In fact, many healthcare organizations are embracing automation out of necessity.  Some organizations can’t find the right staff and so they need technology automation to help them augment their staff.  Others see technology as the key to embracing new patient demands for convenience.  Either way, automation has become a trusted path forward for healthcare organizations.

To better understand some of these over arching trends, we sat down with Matt Dickson, Senior VP of Product, Strategy and GM of Stericycle Communication Solutions.  We asked him what he was hearing were some of his customers biggest challenges.  Plus, Stericycle just completed a big consumer survey so Dickson had great insights into how the market is reacting differently to automation now than it did in the past.

We asked Dickson about the impact he’s seen first hand when healthcare automates things like patient self-scheduling and patient communication.  He also addresses the fear that many users feel when it comes to automating these areas.  Furthermore, we ask him where else practices and health systems should be looking to automate and how patients are responding to these automations.

If you want to learn more about how your healthcare organization can benefit from automation and be better prepared for the workforce challenges healthcare faces, you’ll enjoy this interview with Matt Dickson from Stericycle Communication Solutions.
