Burnt Out of Being Burnt Out – What’s Needed to Really Help Physicians?

You can’t turn anywhere in healthcare that you’re not seeing people burnt out.  It’s gotten so bad that it’s now contributing to healthcare workforce issues.  COVID hasn’t helped.  Over regulation hasn’t helped.  And don’t even talk to me about that yoga room either (It’s nice, but not a real solution to burnout).

To better understand what’s really causing burnout in physicians, I had a chance to interview Dr. Eve Bloomgarden, MD, COO at IMPACT and CDO of Women in Medicine, Dr. Subha Airan-Javia, MD, CEO & Founder at CareAlign and Hospitalist at Penn Medicine, and Shane Danaher, COO at Divurgent.  They each dive into the nitty gritty details of the causes of burnout that many of us don’t even recognize as issues.

I also ask them if tech is the cause of the burnout problem or the solution to the problem or both?  Not surprising, there’s a lot of nuance to the conversation.  One key point was that tech implemented the right way can help burnout.  However, poorly implemented tech can be a major cause for burnout.  For example, a doctor who’s used the same EHR at a different organization may know of a feature they really like that hasn’t been implemented yet at their new organization.  Knowing that the tech is there to help and it hasn’t been implemented can be extremely frustrating.  That’s just one of many examples of how tech can help and hurt.

We also discussed what the right tech stack would look like to help physicians.  They share some of the features and functions that can actually help.  Related to this, they share how things like IT selection, implementation, and use play into all of this.  Ensuring you have the right tech stack (and yes, that sometimes means going beyond the EHR) that’s implemented the right way is extremely important to reduce the burnout clinicians are feeling.

Workforce retention has become a key priority for leaders in healthcare.  While we’d love to be able to just launch a simple wellness program, Dr. Bloomgarden, Dr. Airan-Javia, and Danaher offer a more pragmatic and realistic understanding of some of the real challenges we face and what can be done to alleviate them.  Check out the interview below to learn more.
