One of the glaring problems that’s appeared much more clearly in healthcare the past couple years is health equity and health disparities. It’s a multi-faceted problem that’s not going to be solved over night. In many ways, it’s engrained in many parts of our system. To address it is going to take a consistent effort by many (maybe all?) in healthcare to do what they can within their own sphere and influence.
A great example of this is the team at Audacious Inquiry, a PointClickCare Company, who recently published an eBook on “Health Equity and Health Disparities: The Role of Health IT and the Need to Standardize Data Collection.” I see this as the epitome of a company taking a proactive role within their expertise to improve health equity and health disparities. Download the eBook to see what I mean.
To dive into these challenges and understand the motivation behind this eBook, I sat down with Scott Afzal, President of Audacious Inquiry, to understand their thinking in this area. In the interview, Afzal shares how he defines health equity and why it matters. Plus, he shares some specific examples of health disparities and then discusses how health IT can help to address the problem.
It won’t surprise anyone that knows Audacious Inquiry that we also talked about how health data and healthcare interoperability play into all of this. How can it help or hurt the situation? While it’s great to put out an eBook on the subject, I also asked Afzal about his company’s commitment to address these problems.
