One of the most interesting topics in healthcare right now is SDoH (Social Determinants of Health). It’s a topic we’ve been discussing for a number of years, but many things are forcing the issue into a light that it had never seen before. New healthcare reimbursement is forcing the issue and many healthcare organizations are starting their own SDoH projects as an important part of the future care they provide their patient populations.
Amidst all the talk of SDoH has been a lot of people working through the challenges of SDoH including Janice Tufte, Patient Collaborator at Hassanah Consulting. She’s been working for years on various social issues that impact health in her community and has taken part in national committees shaping SDoH efforts including new SDoH data standards.
Below you’ll find Tufte sharing her view on the state of SDoH today and how COVID-19 has impacted and accelerated SDoH in healthcare. Plus, we talk about whether these changes are sustainable or if the COVID SDoH spike is something that won’t last. We also talk about her work on the HL7 Gravity Project which is defining standards for SDoH data. Tufte also shares some examples of SDoH making a difference in patients’ lives and what other SDoH barriers still need to be overcome.
