As I looked over the agenda for the CHIME Spring Forum (still all virtual), the session that popped out to me was a panel of the CEOs of the top 3 hospital and health system EHR:
- Howard Messing, CEO at MEDITECH
- Judy Faulkner, Founder & CEO at Epic
- Brent Shafer, Chairman and CEO at Cerner
Unfortunately, Brent Shafer from Cerner had a family issue and so Donald Trigg, President at Cerner, stepped in for him. Not surprisingly, the moderator didn’t ask many hard or controversial questions, but the various EHR leaders did share some interesting insights and perspectives. I found their comments on what topics they were watching useful and they offered some good leadership advice.
Here’s a roundup of some of the ideas and perspectives these EHR leaders shared:
Looking forward to hearing what’s shared on this panel of EHR Executives from @cerner @MEDITECH and Epic. #CIO @CIOCHIME #CHIME21 #CHIME21Spring pic.twitter.com/OZ8iymJxV7

“It’s been great to see how #HealthIT teams have come together to get things done in record time over the past year. It’s a testament to resiliency and the type of people we have on our teams” Don Trigg @Cerner #CHIME21Spring #CHIME21 #HITsm @CIOCHIME pic.twitter.com/mXMy1sFZaP

What’s on the horizon?
Judy (Epic) – Growth of data & integration with Genomic data.
Howard (@MEDITECH) – Growth of the cloud & the influence of companies like Google. AI is great, but there’s a lot of low hanging fruit
Don (@Cerner) – CRM and Digital Front door

Change is often embraced by leaders and new employees. So, worry about middle management who may be more resistant to change. Howard from @MEDITECH #CHIME21Spring

Bring people together to make a decision. As a leader, only make a decision when one isn’t being made or isn’t being made quick enough. -Howard from @MEDITECH #CHIME21Spring

“If you asked me where I worked a few years ago I would have answered ‘a software company’, but now I answer with ‘a healthcare company’. That’s truly what we do. The data is now so critical to care” Howard Messing @MEDITECH #CHIME21 #CHIME21Spring #HITsm pic.twitter.com/5EM8pmtW35

No doubt this was just a high level summary of what was shared, but some good insights into leadership and what these EHR vendor leaders are thinking about.
Also, since many are interested in virtual events, CHIME hosted a fun virtual party that was sponsored by Hyland Healthcare where we played Blackjack virtually. It actually worked quite well even if Ed Marx won the table.
Pretty cool virtual black jack setup by @AbbeyRoadEnt for the @CIOCHIME event. Good times interacting with the table and Blackjack Dealer Jackson from Toronto. #CHIME21Spring

Patients want and need their complete longitudinal medical record to be portable and instantly accessible at ANY point of care.
