Logic, Trust and Anti-Vax Communities – #HITsm Chat Topic

We’re excited to share the topic and questions for this week’s #HITsm chat happening Friday, 2/7 at Noon ET (9 AM PT). This week’s chat will be hosted by Jennifer Michelle, MPH, EMT (@MMSJennifer) on the topic of “Logic, Trust and Anti-Vax Communities”.

A continual thorn in the side of healthcare is the popularity of alternative medicine that’s not evidence based, particularly as represented by the anti-vax community.

According to Grand View Research, “the global complementary and alternative medicine market size was valued at USD 59.76 billion in 2018.”1 Paul Offit, MD, who co-invented the rotavirus vaccine says, “about 50% of Americans use alternative medicine, and 10% use it on their children.”

The underlying theme of these alternative therapies is a distrust in our healthcare system. How has our emphasis on fee-for-service and cranking out as many patient appointments in an hour as possible contributed to this lack of trust? What are the implications of value-based care in healing this rift?

The medical response so far has been to counterpunch with facts and evidence. Yet people rarely change beliefs based on logic. It is emotional connection that makes the difference – something providers have very little time to provide.

Join us for this week’s #HITsm chat where we’ll discuss alternative medicines and
