For the 13th episode of the Healthcare IT Podcast, we’re talking about Blockchain in Healthcare. Everyone has no doubt seen talk of blockchain in the news. Maybe you didn’t realize it was blockchain since they called it bitcoin or ethereum or some other term that uses blockchain.
Turns out that blockchain is being applied everywhere including healthcare. However, there’s still a lot of misunderstanding about what it is and what impact it will have on healthcare. While Colin and I aren’t the premiere experts on the subject, we thought it would be fun to tackle the topic and hopefully give those in healthcare a better understanding of what blockchain is, where we could see it in healthcare, and places we don’t think we’ll see blockchain in healthcare.
In this podcast, we reference two guest articles that really offer great insights into blockchain. The first is “Will Blockchain Ever Really Matter in Healthcare?” by Todd Winey from Intersystems and the second is “5 Practical Use Cases Anchoring Blockchain in Healthcare” by David Houlding from Microsoft. These are two great articles that drove a lot of the discussion in this podcast.
Here’s a quick rundown of the topics and questions we discuss in this episode:
- What is Blockchain?
- Positives and Negatives of Blockchain
- Healthcare Blockchain Hype
- Where can Blockchain really be useful in healthcare?
