If you’ve never had a chance to hear Dave Chase speak, you need to find an opportunity to hear him offer some really important perspectives on where we are as a healthcare industry. For those not familiar with Dave Chase, you can learn more about him and his work on the Health Rosetta and his book “A Citizen Leader’s Guide to Restoring the American Dream: Rebuilding Hope, Health, & Well-being in Our Communities.” Dave Chase frankly says what many know about healthcare, but are afraid to say out loud.
To get a little taste of what Dave Chase shares, here’s a quick Twitter roundup from his talk at the HCAA Executive Forum which Colin Hung and myself attended.
Excited to be here in Vegas and getting the chance to hear @chasedave speak here at #HCAAExecForum Ready for a powerful story mixed with a passionate call for change. cc #hcldr pic.twitter.com/LNyavg2OUh

As an optimist, @chasedave is sharing some really sad stories from healthcare. A realistic look at what's happening in healthcare though. #hcaaexecforum

I love that you can be an optimist and still acknowledge the problems we face.
The only systems healthcare would buy are ones that would "game" the healthcare reimbursement system. #hcaaexecforum
— John Lynn (@techguy) February 5, 2019
This is actually what I’ve seen and the acknowledgment of why EHR software didn’t make clinical care better for doctors, but it did help improve revenue cycle management (at least when it was done right). We’ll see if stage 2 will improve clinical care now.
Nothing gets the CEO attention like a Target on their back. #HCAAexecforum

This was shared by Dave Chase when he talked about the Opioid Crisis and the target on healthcare CEOs back as people die due to Opioid addiction.
How #TPAs can help change the status quo of a crooked #healthcare system. @chasedave @HealthRosetta examines the workable challenges for our #HCAAExecForum audience pic.twitter.com/uxtHiUhLbL

One of the most powerful things about the opioid crisis is that it seems to pretty much impact everyone.
Always a sobering stat to see/hear @chasedave reminding the audience here at #HCAAExecForum that this is a clear sign of systems failure. 70% of people filing for bankruptcy have insurance #HITsm #hcldr pic.twitter.com/KsEggZzf8Y
— Colin Hung (@Colin_Hung) February 5, 2019
I love this stat paired with his acknowledgment that insurance is not the solution to many of healthcare’s problems.
We have to question what we're doing with our healthcare money. #HCAAexecforum #hitsm #hcldr #pinksocks @chasedave pic.twitter.com/7j013xff8D
— John Lynn (@techguy) February 5, 2019
And this is the real problem with our spending in healthcare and the indication of what needs to be changed.
Millennials will spend more than half their total lifetime earnings on #healthcare… @chasedave @HealthRosetta #HCAAExecForum pic.twitter.com/iT4orJWjgW
— HCAA (@HCAAinfo) February 5, 2019
This is a scary thought. A similar concept can be applied to employers.
The good news: “Building successful tailored plans is getting easier.”@chasedave @HealthRosetta #HCAAExecForum pic.twitter.com/4rjV25unpz
— HCAA (@HCAAinfo) February 5, 2019
This is good news, but we still have a long ways to go.
Love this "shipping container" analogy from @chasedave We need a modular approach fo High Performance Health Benefits Plans #HCAAExecForum cc #hcldr #HITsm pic.twitter.com/xAvoBiHE50
— Colin Hung (@Colin_Hung) February 5, 2019
The shipping container analogy is that the solutions to the problems are modular and can be stacked on each other. Be sure to check out Health Rosetta for all the details on this.
A simple message/challenge from @chasedave at #HCAAExecForum – Time To Get On The Bus and change the conversation in healthcare because the status quo is a road to nowhere. cc #HITsm #hcldr pic.twitter.com/qL7e3HaYQr
— Colin Hung (@Colin_Hung) February 5, 2019
While we don’t cover the health plan space that much here at Healthcare IT Today, the principles shared by Dave Chase seem to apply to all of us in healthcare. Plus, it will take all of us to get involved and be part of the change.
