The popular and massive HIMSS Annual conference is just a short 1.5 weeks away. Many in healthcare IT love and dread this conference. What’s not to love about the opportunity to meet, network, and connect with 40,000-50,000 of your closest friends and 1300 vendors.
Ok, maybe that’s part of the issue with HIMSS. It’s so large that it’s hard to find interesting people that are willing to engage you deeply on a topic that matters to you. Meeting a bunch of people is great, but can leave you empty when they don’t help you in your career. However, those few conversations (often at the evening
party networking event) where you find someone who faces your same challenges and offers you solutions and commiseration is worth the trip.
How then do you maximize those deep conversations and connections?
Our approach at Healthcare Scene is simple. We host a wide variety of #HIMSS18 meetups and invite our community to join us for open-ended discussion on topics that matter to healthcare IT professionals. These HIMSS meetups are basically like focused dinner parties without the drunken guy bothering you.
When you look at your career, one of the best things you can do is create a network of meaningful relationships. I know of very few relationships that have developed stopping by a vendor booth or sitting in a conference session. Relationships happen when we engage, discuss, and even sometimes respectfully argue. This is true for any conference, but especially true at a conference the size of HIMSS.
One final suggestion on making the most at HIMSS. Instead of looking around and seeing what you can get from the HIMSS community, look around and see how many people you can help. There is nothing you can do that’s more magical in a relationship than helping someone with no expectation of something in return. Try it out. You’ll be amazed how much better you feel about yourself and the deep, long-lasting relationships you’ll create with people in the process.
If you’re not going to make it to HIMSS or if you’re looking for some practical healthcare IT innovations, you may want to check out Healthcare IT Expo. The entire conference is built around the concepts described above. Although, we’re admittedly biased since we organize the conference. We hope to see you all at HIMSS in Las Vegas or Health IT Expo in New Orleans.
