We all go through peaks and valleys in our career. It’s important to remember during all of the ups and downs of life and career that change isn’t always better. I learned this lesson early on in my career and it’s been a very important lesson for many aspects of my life.
While change isn’t always better, I found this quote by Martin Luther King Jr to be great advice to all of us in our career pursuits:
I love the idea of moving forward. One of the most satisfying things in life is making progress. One of the worst things in life is staying static or even going backwards. While in some cases you may need to switch jobs to keep moving forward and progressing in your life, that’s not always the case. You can still move forward in your career in your current position.
I’m sure many people reading that last line will say, “But John, there’s no opportunity for career advancement at my current job.” Then, you get the litany of reasons why there’s no opportunity to move up the career ladder at their current company. Maybe that’s true, but career advancement isn’t the only way to move forward and progress.
One of the best ways to move forward in your career is to learn something new. Maybe that means you take on another project. Maybe that means you start blogging about your experience and knowledge. Starting a blog will force you to advance your knowledge. Maybe that means learning a new skill that could benefit you in your current or a future position.
Don’t let others make excuses for why your career is stagnant. Take the bull by the horns and move forward with something you enjoy. Every time I’ve done that in my career I’ve been rewarded with amazing job satisfaction. You will too.
