Esteemed roster of industry leaders to steer consumer awareness effort
Arlington, Va., May 1, 2014 – The Consumer Electronics Association (CEA)® announced today the newly formed Health and Fitness Technology Division, a response to the growing role consumer electronics devices are playing in improving health and fitness. The Division, originating as the Health and Fitness Technology Working Group in 2010, has made several valuable contributions to the industry during the past four years.
“Technology innovations now offer unprecedented opportunities for consumers to take control of their health and engage in their personal fitness,” said Gary Shapiro, president and CEO, CEA. “Under CEA’s leadership, the Health and Fitness Division brings together a group of proven leaders in the space to further raise awareness that these products can help us change our lives for the better.”
CEA’s report, The Connected Health and Wellness Market, created in conjunction with Parks Associates, forecasts that the evolution of U.S. healthcare will result in a 142 percent increase over the next five years in personal health and wellness product sales as well as software and service revenues. Additionally, the CEA report Understanding the Market for Wearable Health and Fitness Devices shows consumer interest in purchasing dedicated wearable fitness devices specifically in the next 12 months, quadrupled in 2013, making it the largest year-over-year increase for any category of fitness device.

Prominently on display at the 2014 International CES®, digital health technology had its largest dedicated footprint ever, increasing by 40 percent, as did the digital fitness presence, which increased by 30 percent. The 2014 CES included notable health and fitness announcementsfrom Intel, LG, Reebok, Scosche, Skulpt and many more.
Last year, the Health and Fitness Technology Working Group joined others in sponsoring an ongoing educational program series, the “Mobile Medical Apps (MMA) Roadshow,” to demystify the FDA requirements for new app developers and identify best practices among those already producing regulated apps. CEA also conducted a satellite media tour, reaching 4.3 million consumers directly, to promote health and fitness technology products directly to consumers, suggesting products to get and stay healthy in the New Year.
