GE Healthcare Unveils Imaging Diagnostics…Unplugged

GE Healthcare announced that their Centricity Radiology Mobile Access app has received FDA 510(k) clearance, enabling radiologists to use their iPads and iPhones to remotely diagnose patient CT and MR images.

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access is a native app that allows radiologists to access patient PACS (picture archiving and communication system) images and reports on mobile Apple iOS platforms. The app allows radiologists to provide review and diagnose images while away from their hospital workstation within moments of the scans being taken, reducing test result wait times.

This news comes at an interesting time for the mobile health movement, as the FDA works to prepare guidelines for other mHealth apps looking to gain validation. GE’s announcement is reflective of a larger trend in the healthcare industry, as more physicians are adopting mHealth apps and more app developers are eager for FDA validation – a recent study from ABI Research predicted that the mobile health app market is on track to hit $400 million by 2016 (up from $120 million in 2010).

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access Receives FDA Clearance for Advanced, Diagnostic CT and MR Image Review

CHICAGO — November 30, 2011 GE Healthcare (NYSE: GE) demonstrated new capabilities for its Centricity* Radiology Mobile Access platform today at RSNA 2011, enabling radiologists to use their iPad® and iPhone® devices to remotely diagnose select patient images from Centricity PACS.

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 is the industry’s only mobile product with clearance for primary diagnosis that accesses images and reports from Centricity PACS. This new mode of access removes a sizable productivity barrier for an increasingly mobile field.

Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 demonstrates GE Healthcare’s leadership position in the field of mobile health and portability, while safeguarding patient privacy by not downloading any personal data to the client device. It also provides access to past exams with the speed and precision Centricity PACS users have come to count on.

“This application and its diagnostic clearance provide further validation of our continued investment in our Centricity PACS platform,” said Don Woodlock, Vice President and General Manager of GE Healthcare IT. “As a native application for the Apple iOS and Android operating systems, Centricity Radiology Mobile Access requires very little training and, we believe, provides a more productive user experience versus an emulated Windows application that was designed to be driven by a mouse. Today, Centricity PACS stores one in five exams in the US. These advanced wireless capabilities will only expand its utility.”

The diagnostic clearance for Centricity Radiology Mobile Access 2.0 is limited to computed tomography and magnetic resonance exams on an iPad or iPhone when not in proximity to a PACS workstation.
