Vendor-Hospital Partnership Approach to Resolving CDS Challenges the Focus of Orlando Health, Wolters Kluwer Health Co-Presentation at AMIA 2011 Symposium

Dr. Kahlid Moidu, Dr. Stephen Claypool to discuss joint development of order set-EHR mapping tool through Wolters Kluwer Health’s Innovation Lab

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – Oct. 20, 2011 – Orlando Health took unique approach to overcoming the challenge of updating, consolidating and maintaining thousands of “home grown” order sets available within its EHR system. It partnered with Wolters Kluwer Health as part of the company’s Innovation Lab, where Wolters Kluwer informaticists work with hospitals to develop solutions to problems hindering utilization of advanced clinical decision support tools.

That partnership – and the resulting order set mapping tools – will be the focus of a joint presentation by Khalid Moidu, M.D., Ph.D, corporate director medical informatics, Orlando Health, and Stephen Claypool, M.D., vice president clinical development and informatics, Wolters Kluwer Health (Booth #113) at the AMIA 2011 Annual Symposium.

Dr. Moidu and Dr. Claypool will present “Innovation Lab: Evidence‐Based Order Sets Tools from a Dynamic Hospital‐Vendor Partnership” on Tuesday, Oct. 25, from 3:30-5 p.m. in the Lincoln East/Monroe Room at the symposium, taking place Oct. 22-26 in Washington, D.C.

Orlando Health is a $1.7 billion not-for-profit healthcare organization and statutory teaching hospital system consisting of eight hospitals and facilities, including the area’s only Level One Trauma Center for adults and pediatrics. The 1,882-bed health system has more than 2,000 affiliated physicians and is one of just a handful of health systems nationwide to reach Stage 6 of the HIMSS Analytics’ EMR Adoption Model.

As part of its long-term health IT strategy, Orlando Health had amassed a sizable library of evidence-based order sets within its EHR system. These were utilized by physicians at the point of care via CPOE, which enjoyed a corporate-wide compliance rate of more than 80%. With an additional 2,500 order sets in its pipeline, the decision was made to deploy ProVation Order Sets, powered by UpToDate Decision Support, to streamline and accelerate the overall development process.  The electronic order set solution from Wolters Kluwer Health also automates maintenance, ensuring order sets remain current with new medical evidence, therapeutics and diagnostics and regulatory changes.

“What was missing was an efficient means by which to consolidate and maintain the thousands of order sets that were created prior to deployment of ProVation Order Sets to ensure they conformed to standards, met quality protocols and complied with best-practice guidelines,” said Dr. Moidu. “The Innovation Lab offered a solution that was not only in line with Orlando Health’s reputation as a leader in the use of health IT, but that would allow us to bypass what promised to be a lengthy and complex manual reconstruction process.”

Through the Innovation Lab, Orlando Health and Wolters Kluwer Health clinical informatics experts teamed up to develop tools that mapped order sets from the health system’s EHR and recreated them within ProVation Order Sets. They were then mapped to structured orderables in the software’s order catalog so they could be updated and integrated back into the EHR with limited manual intervention.

“The Innovation Lab is an extension of Wolters Kluwer Health’s mission to continuously innovate and advance clinical decision support by working closely with our clients to identify solutions to some of the most vexing health IT problems,” said Dr. Claypool. “The mapping tools developed for Orlando Health are a prime example, because they can now be utilized by other hospitals to ensure existing order sets can be maintained as easily and effectively as those built within an electronic order set solution.”
