Ideal EMR use

Katherine Rourke put out a post on June 15th  (EMR Education Requirements For Doctors a Mixed Blessing) regarding her vision on how doctors should ideally use EMRs.  She commented  that “…doctors need to know how to leverage their EMRs to improve patient health, to detect possible issues such as medication mix-ups and streamline clinical data sharing, not just get through a clinical interview screen compentently or figure out e-prescribing. If states are going to get involved with the EMR education process, why not go for higher-level training which can actually improve patient care over the long term?”

While that’s an interesting proposition, it seems a bit more than most doctors are prepared to do.  Most of use really are just trying to get through the day and see all the patients competently and compassionately while incorporating more electronic care in the form of prescriptions and other orders.  Unfortunately, we are already bursting at the seams with patient care delivery.  The above topics go above and beyond the provider level and into the systems level of healthcare, in my opinion, although I agree that providers should be aware of such issues in the spirit of awareness and education.  In reality, it seems those issues need to be designed into the EMR system by software engineers, and how much further doctors need to be involved, if at all, are a bit of a quandary.  Just my 2 cents for the topic…
