A “How To” Guide for EMR Vendor Certification – 2011 Webinar

Epic Systems Corporation makes software for mid-size and large medical groups, hospitals, and integrated healthcare organizations – working with customers that include community hospitals, academic facilities, children’s organizations, safety net providers and multi-hospital systems.  Epic® has again been named the #1 Overall Software Vendor for 2010 by KLAS*. For their healthcare organization clients, Epic Systems provides a wide variety of EMR systems training programs, and subsequently methods to become Epic® EMR Certified.  This particular training and certification is provided exclusively by Epic Systems and only for their clients and their consulting agency partners’ staff.  To become Epic® system certified is much sought after nationwide, because it indicates to healthcare organizations and consulting agency employers of one’s EMR Systems specialized knowledge and proficiency to carry out the intricate requirements to safely and efficiently implement this vendor’s EMR system.

I’m well aware of this process as I have written about including my most popular post ‘I Got Certified for Healthcare IT Jobs – You Can too! For me, this process to get Epic® EMR Vendor certified has been the very best career advancement I have experienced in my 25 year-old Healthcare Information Technology profession. Currently there are many, many new and exciting ways to get ‘Clinical Informatics’ education and/or degrees, including the ones being posted by my fellow bloggers here at Healthcare IT Today.  I have also mentioned in my blogs the great programs being offered by many community colleges nationwide due to the ARRA stimulus U.S. government funds for EMR / EHR certification programs.  But for folks such as myself, who have been around Information Technology since the “dinosaur” days, EMR Vendor Certification is the best ‘On-The-Job’ training program I have ever experienced and has provided a method for me to more than double my salary and/or hourly rate in 7 years, has allowed me to travel to work at hospitals and clinics nationwide, has expanded my IT skills to now include clinical workflow knowledge, and to be involved with the most exciting (and very challenging) cutting edge career happening today!  I have studied and worked very hard in acquiring three (3) Epic® EMR application certifications, I have completed 7 years of EMR implementation work assignments, and have this wonderful opportunity to share all of this through my blogs.

This year of 2011, my blogs and upcoming webinars will focus on EMR Vendor Certification experiences and how to apply this expertise and skill set in getting and keeping EMR Jobs and/or EMR consulting assignments.

  • Hi Shirley,

i am so proud of you and what you have done. I m planning to follow through your steps. I have a question though…i have been a nurse for 5 years and am in the process of getting employed by epic to be their interface analyst project manager. I have some concerns however. Will they certify me if i work for them directly? what about their non-compete contract? once i leave their company, will i be able to be employed by other hospitals doing epic???

  • Epic will send you to training camps for the PM role and application camps for the applications you support. The non-compete is very strict and you’ll be prevented from working on Epic projects for at least a year. I’ve heard they’ve increased the non-compete period. Even in places or situations where a non-compete would be unenforceable Epic has agreements with their customers and partnered not to hire you for that year. Even if you find a way to get an Epic job they’ll instruct their employees not to speak with you (they won’t take your calls, answer your emails, or answer your questions during conference calls).

I look forward in you joining this webinar and I will be happy to provide to you some great leads to get into this field. (…for me it was getting hired directly by a hospital that installed Epic EMR application system and then as a hospital employee you will get sent out to Epic for training…I let you in on how this happened to me and is still happening around the country!)

  • Hi Shirley! I’ve shared your links through tweets and linked posts and via email to a large number of folks that are eager to break into the Epic Space. Thank you so much for providing this information.

  • Shirley, how difficult is the training? My employer is currently selecting employees to send for training at EPIC. They have indicated that it is extremely difficult and we will be spending 10 & 12 hours at work in addition to time spent at home working on projects and studying for each module exam. They are scaring alot of us away! Is it really that difficult?

  • I hear you talking about Epic but is it possible to get certified through other companies such as eclincals , MD charts, etc. an how do I get started i took a very short ehr course and feel it was insufficient

  • Hi Shirley, I have a bachelor degree in health system management and currently am working in the hospital as a registrar. I have basic knowledge about computer. However, I am planning to get in to EMR career. How do I get epic certified in EMR?

  • Bella,

The method for me (and most of the professionals I know who are Epic EMR Certified), is to get hired by a healthcare facility that has already implementated Epic EMRor is seeking to implement Epic EMR and be a part of the implementation team. This employer will then in turn send you through Epic Systems EMR provided Training.

    Regards,
    Shirley

  • I am a pharmacist. I am interested in HIT. How would you suggest I get started. What steps you qualify me for even trying to get EPIC certified?

  • Hi Shirley,

I came across this website and would really appreciate your advice on how I can become Epic certified.

I currently work for a a premier medical facility in the NYC area. My position entails assisting various ambulatory departments with transitioning into the new program and I primarily work with administrative staff(Cadence,ADT, Prelude). I would love to learn more about the various modules and very eager to become certified or even credentialed.

Unfortunatley, my employer will not cover my certification yet I am considering other career options to improve my marketability and enhance my knowledge about the Epic systems.

Thank you in advance for any insight you provide.

    Sincerely,
    Nicole

  • Shirley,

    Wonderful blog. Thanks so much.

I am very interested in Epic credentialing rather than certification. If you have any information regarding these courses, could you please email this information? I am having a difficult time locating the classes.

    Many thanks,

    Betty M.
