Philips showcases commitment to standards-based interoperability at HIMSS11

Andover, Mass. – Royal Philips Electronics (AEX: PHI, NYSE: PHG) will showcase its leadership and long term commitment to Integrating the Healthcare Enterprise (IHE) and driving adoption of industry standards at the annual Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) meeting in Orlando this week.

Philips has been a leading member of IHE since it began in 1998, participating in the organization’s first interoperability demonstration in 1999 and currently serving on the IHE International board as well as co-chairing multiple committees on national and international standard development organizations. During this time, IHE participation has grown from 24 members to more than 260 members.

Earlier this year, Philips participated in the IHE’s 2011 North American Connectathon, along with more than 80 health care IT organizations, by testing nine products across its portfolio of radiology, cardiology and clinical informatics solutions.

The IHE Connectathon is the health care IT industry’s only large-scale interoperability testing event, with sessions held annually in Asia, Europe and North America. During the Connectathon, solutions are tested by exchanging information with complementary systems from multiple vendors to see if they can complete a series of tasks using defined, real-world clinical use cases.

The Connectathon provides in depth demonstration of the participants’ interoperability and compliance with IHE profiles. Participating companies prepare for the event using testing software developed for this purpose. It offers vendors a unique opportunity for connectivity testing—removing barriers to integration that would otherwise have to be dealt with on site, at the customer’s expense.

All the Philips products presented at the recent North American Connectathon passed rigorous testing for more than 20 IHE profiles.  Four of these solutions will be demonstrated during the HIMSS-sponsored Interoperability Showcase in collaboration with IHE, including the Philips Emergin Event Management solution, iSite PACS (picture archiving and communications system), XIRIS radiology information system and IntelliVue Information Center. Philips’ ability to easily connect with complementary technologies to support clinical decision making, clinician mobility and telehealth helps to positively impact patient outcomes, simplify clinician workflow and improve financial outcomes for health care organizations.

Additionally, Dale Wiggins, chief technology officer, Patient Care and Clinical Informatics, for Philips Healthcare, will give a presentation on Tuesday, February 22 at 3:45 p.m. at the Interoperability Showcase on the current state of clinical informatics, covering issues such as clinical decision support, interoperability of health care technologies and standards development.

“Philips is committed to interoperability in our customers’ multivendor environments and helping to enable safe and reliable functionality, with minimal cost while complying with industry standards and integration profiles,” said Wiggins. “As one of the original IHE participants, we are pleased to see many more vendors participate in IHE and help to make multi-vendor interoperability become a reality.”

The HIMSS 2011 Interoperability Showcase will demonstrate a full range of health IT solutions, live interoperability demonstrations and educational opportunities from February 21 to February 24 in booth #7343 in Hall E.
