You’re ready for a new challenge. Whether you are currently employed and seeking greener pastures, or in transition and actively looking for a new job, you know it’s time. But the thought of picking up and moving your family to a new town has kept you from even broaching the subject at home, because you know exactly the horrified reaction you’ll get. Your kids are doing well in school, your spouse loves his/her job, you love your neighborhood, your elderly in-laws live next door, and frankly, you just can’t bear the thought of leaving your friends, your favorite restaurant, your sports team, or your _____________________ (fill in the blank). Or perhaps in our current devalued real estate market, you find that the equity in your home has all but disappeared, and selling it would leave you upside-down (I hear this quite often).
So are you stuck with only opportunities available to you in your own backyard? In the world of Healthcare IT, fortunately, no, because we have the technology! Enter the magical place known as “Virtual/Remote.” Virtual/Remote opportunities are becoming more and more prevalent, particularly as the gap between the qualified supply and the exploding demand widens. Although I am sure there are other variations to this theme, the Virtual/Remote positions I’ve seen posted generally fall into two categories: The employee/consultant works on-site for the employer/client on Monday – Thursday and travels back home on the weekends, or the employee/consultant sets up a home-based office and travels to the employer/client as needed or directed. Clearly there are many benefits to this scenario – the bottom line is that the employer gains a valuable (happy) employee and the employee secures a new position without having to leave the ‘hood!
Naturally, though, there are drawbacks to this arrangement, as well. From the employer side, managing remote employees can often be a challenge, both from a logistical and managerial standpoint. From the employee side, if the “Road Warrior” route is taken, living out of a suitcase four days a week can quickly become tiresome, and if the home-based option applies then working remote can be, well . . . remote! With the right attitude and personality on both sides of the equation, though, Virtual/Remote opportunities can be the perfect solution all the way around. And if you find your dream opportunity is not advertised as “Virtual/Remote?” It doesn’t hurt to ask if this arrangement can be considered! Unless you’ve secretly had enough of those in-laws. . .
Healthcare IT Central features many Virtual/Remote opportunities – simply select “Virtual/Remote” under the location selection. Additionally, for an up-close-and-personal look, I encourage you to follow the blog of Shirley Corsey, an Epic Road Warrior who we are proud to feature on our Healthcare IT Today blogging team.
